LIGHTPOSTS and MOBILES

A former designer and home builder, Grant studied art at the University of Michigan. Originally from West Virginia, he spent 20 years designing and building beautiful, one-of-a-kind homes. But in 1992, he had enough of the construction business and built himself an artist's studio in back of his house. He returned to an earlier vocation he first discovered in art school where he focused on wood and metal sculpture, as well as painting. Grant began the creative process with handcrafted copper and stained glass yardlights that he calls "lampscapes." He placed his line of unique lights at a neighborhood antique store with immediate success.

The lamps' fabrication combines a number of skills. They are individually designed, cut and soldered from solid copper. Using stained glass techniques the lenses are also constructed with an easily removed panel for inserting a light bulb. The lamps are placed on durable, cedar posts that have been sculpted into freestanding organic forms. Special machines were designed just to help shape and cut Grant's lights.
