Rick, a master glassblower, is well known for his vivid colors and portrayals of nature His work is included in numerous public and private collections throughout the world.
The entire glass process begins by melting the glass in large ceramic crucibles at temperatures of over two thousand degrees. The first step is to gather the glass onto a metal rod. The glass is easiest to shape when it is kept hot. This is accomplished by inserting the glass into a reheating oven call a glory hole. This allows them to reheat the glass to a workable temperature.
The glass is continually dipped into other crucibles containing other colors and mixtures of glass. Colors are obtained from the metals in the glass such as copper, nickel, cobalt, tin, etc. The glass is manipulated with special tools and reheated. The glass continues to grow in size and colors as the process is repeated.
Finally, the glass is placed in a special oven that will gradually decrease in temperature to allow the glass to cool slowly. The final result is a mesmerizing creation that offers a different effect with each small change of light upon it. |
