Using traditional methods of glass working with stained glass and fused glass, Opp creates lifelike images of marine life. Individual fish, crabs, seahorses, turtles and squid that hang among the glass stingers are fused glass. They are cut from stained glass which is carefully layered and fired in a kiln at temperatures over 1500 degrees. Firing can require about 24 hours in the kiln from heat up to cool down. All the colorful detail is achieved by applying different colors of crushed glass which is called "frit," glass rods and other assorted pieces of glass. There is no applied paint or surface color used.
The jellyfish chimes are designed for outside use and will withstand extremely high winds as long as they are hung where they will not strike other objects. Opp does recommend removal for hurricanes! Just make sure they are hung with enough clearance so it will not swing and strike the house, furniture or other windchimes. |
