GLASS BY KURT McVAY
Kurt produces a wide variety of dishwasher safe serving dishes for sushi, appetizers, desserts, condiments and dinnerware as well as versatile trays for jewelry, candy, butter, salad or bread. He creates compelling, one of a kind glassware using an age old technique. He began his work in glassblowing and architectural glass almost twenty years ago. His current work is highly decorative, ranging from wall mountings to tableware.

Glass colors used by Kurt are specially made to fuse together. Fusing is a type of kiln-formed glass that's characterized by the cutting and layering of cut pieces of glass, then melting them together in a kiln. Each piece requires 2 or more firings in a kiln. The process of heating, cooling, cutting, layering and remelting produce an incredible variety of patterns that result in each glassware piece being unique in its own detail.

Fused glass was created by the Egyptians and Persians nearly 4,000 years ago and was the first synthetic ever made. Rare and difficult to produce, it was valued as semiprecious. Although fusing was eclipsed by mass production glass blowing 2,000 years ago, it is still the rarest and most unusual glass technique.
