Clay, a hydrous silicate, is actually a living organism. When the organism dies, the clay becomes stiff and is no longer useable. By adding water back into clay and allowing it to sit for 60-90 days, it becomes reusable. Chemically speaking, it is a compound composed of alumina and silica combined with water. Glazes are added to each sculpture after an initial firing. Pieces are fired in a kiln at high temperatures to cook the glazes that will impart color to the work.
